Kymco Xciting 250i - Owner's Manual > Engine oil
Engine oil recommendation
Use a premium quality 4-stroke engine oil to ensure longer service life of your scooter. Only use oils that have a SJ rating per the API service classification.
Engine oil viscosity - Xciting 500i or 500Ri: SAE 5W-50
Engine oil viscosity - Xciting 300i or 300Ri: SAE 15W-40
Engine oil viscosity - Xciting 250i or 250Ri: SAE 15W-40
If these viscosities are not available, select an alternative engine oil according to the chart shown below.
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 500i or 500Ri: 2.1 qt (2.0 L)
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 300i or 300Ri: 0.95 qt (0.9 L)
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 250i or 250Ri: 0.95 qt (0.9 L)
Engine oil level inspection
Check the engine oil level each day before riding your scooter.
The level must be maintained between the upper 1 and lower level 2 marks on the oil filler cap/dipstick 3.
1. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Make sure the red low oil pressure indicator goes off. If the light remains on, stop the engine immediately.
Running the engine with insufficient oil pressure can cause serious engine damage.
2. Stop the engine and put the scooter on its center stand on level ground.
3. After a few minutes, remove the oil filler cap/dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert the oil filler cap/dipstick without screwing it in. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick. The oil level should be between the upper and lower marks on the oil filler cap/dipstick.
4. If required, add the specified oil so the oil level touches the upper level mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
5. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick 3. Check for oil leaks.
The engine and related components can become very hot.
Use care when inspecting the oil level so you do not burn yourself. If needed, let the engine and exhaust system cool before working in those areas.
Engine oil replacement
Engine oil quality is the primary factor that affects engine longevity.
Change your scooter's engine oil as specified in the maintenance schedule.
NOTE: When riding your scooter in very dusty conditions, oil changes should be performed more frequently than specified in the maintenance schedule.
NOTE: Always dispose of used engine oil in a environmentally responsible manner. You should take the drain oil in a sealed container to your local recycling center or service station for reclamation. Do not throw the oil in the trash, pour it on the ground, or pour it down a drain.
Prolonged contact with used engine oil can cause skin cancer. Although rare, this possibly exists if you handle oil on a frequent basis. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible after handling used oil.
NOTE: Change the engine oil with the engine at normal operating temperature and the scooter on its center stand to assure complete and rapid draining.
1. Remove the oil filler/dipstick 3 from the right crankcase cover.
2. Place a suitable container (drain pan) under the left crankcase.
3. Remove the oil drain plug 4 from the crankcase to drain the oil.
4. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to the specified torque.
Oil drain plug torque: 18 lb-ft (25 N-m)
5. Add oil to the engine per the amounts listed below, and reinstall the oil filler/dipstick
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 500i or 500Ri: 2.1 qt (2.0 L)
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 300i or 300Ri: 0.95 qt (0.9 L)
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 250i or 250Ri: 0.95 qt (0.9 L)
NOTE: Amounts are after draining the oil only.
6. Start the engine and let it idle for 2 - 3 minutes.
7. Stop the engine and check the oil level on the dipstick when the scooter is parked on the center stand, on level ground.
8. Adjust the oil level as required (so the level reaches the upper mark on the dipstick). Replace the dipstick and inspect for any leaks.
Running the engine with insufficient oil pressure can cause serious engine damage.
The engine and related components can become very hot.
Use care when inspecting the oil level so you do not burn yourself. If needed, let the engine and exhaust system cool before working in those areas.
Oil filter cartridge service
(Xciting 500i & 500Ri models)
Oil strainer screen service
(Xciting 250/300i & 250/300RI models)
Changing the oil filter cartridge requires a special oil filter cartridge tool and a torque wrench. If you do not have these tools and the necessary technical skill, have this service performed by your KYMCO dealer.
NOTE: If you did not use a torque wrench during this procedure, see your KYMCO dealer as soon as possible so the fasteners and the oil filter cartridge can be checked for proper installation.
NOTE: Change the engine oil with the engine at normal operating temperature and with the scooter on its center stand to assure complete and rapid draining.
1. Remove the oil filler/dipstick 3 from the right crankcase cover.
2. Place a drain pan under the crankcase and remove the oil strainer screen cap 5.
3. The spring 6 and the oil strainer screen 7 will come out when the cap 5 is removed.
4. Clean the oil strainer screen.
5. Make sure the oil strainer screen, the seal on the screen, and the drain plug O-ring 8 are in good condition.
6. Xciting 500i & 500RI models: Remove the rubber sleeve 8 by removing the clip 10.
7. Xciting 500i & 500RI models: Remove the oil filter cartridge 11 with a filter wrench, and allow any residual oil to drain out.
Discard the oil filter cartridge.
8. Xciting 500i & 500RI models: Apply a thin coat of fresh engine oil to the new oil filter cartridge's rubber seal AL.
9. Xciting 500i & 500RI models: Using the KYMCO special tool and a torque wrench, install the new oil filter cartridge and tighten it to the specified torque.
Oil filter cartridge torque: 8 lb-ft (12 N-m)
Only use a genuine KYMCO genuine oil filter cartridge, or a filter cartridge of equivalent quality, on your scooter.
Using the wrong KYMCO filter cartridge, or a non- KYMCO filter cartridge which is not of equivalent quality, may cause engine damage.
10. Install the oil strainer screen, spring and oil strainer screen cap. Tighten the cap to the specified torque.
Oil strainer screen cap torque: 11 lb-ft (15 N-m)
11. Fill the crankcase with the recommended grade engine oil.
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 500i or 500Ri: 2.2 qt (2.1 L)
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 300i or 300Ri: 0.95 qt (0.9 L)
Engine oil capacity - Xciting 250i or 250Ri: 0.95 qt (0.9 L)
NOTE: Amounts are after draining the oil and filter, only.
12. Install the oil filler cap/dipstick.
13. Start the engine and let it idle for 2 - 3 minutes.
14. Stop the engine and check the oil level on the dipstick with the scooter parked on the center stand, on level ground.
15. Adjust the oil level as required (so the oil reaches the upper mark on the dipstick). Replace the dipstick and inspect for any leaks.
