Oil Level Inspection
- If the engine is cold, start the engine and run it for several minutes at idle speed.
- Stop the engine, then wait several minutes until the oil settles.
NOTICE
Racing the engine before the oil reaches every part can cause engine seizure.
- Use the center stand by holding the motorcycle vertical on level ground.
- Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick.
- Wipe the dipstick clean.
- Install the oil filler cap/dipstick without screwing it in, and then remove it.
- Check the engine oil level on the dipstick.
The oil level should come up between the low and high level lines on the dipstick.

- If the oil level is too high, remove the excess oil through the oil filler cap opening using a syringe or some other suitable device.
- If the oil level is too low, add oil to reach the correct level. Use the same type and brand of oil that is already in the engine.
Oil and/or Oil Filter Change
- Warm up the engine thoroughly, and then stop it.
- Set the motorcycle up on its center stand.
- Place an oil pan beneath the engine.
- Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick.
- Remove the engine oil drain bolt.

WARNING
Engine oil is a toxic substance.
Dispose of used oil properly.
Contact your local authorities for approved disposal methods or possible recycling.
- When the oil filter is replaced, remove the oil filter cap.

- Replace the oil filter with a new one.
- Apply engine oil to the grommet.
- Install the oil filter so that the grommet faces to the engine side.

NOTICE
Inside-Out installation stop oil flow, the causing engine seizure.
- Replace the O-ring with a new one.
- Apply grease to a O-ring.
- Install the spring.

- Install the oil filter cap and tighten it securely.
Tightening Torque
Oil Filter Cap: 9.3 N*m (0.95 kgf*m, 82 in*lb)
- After the oil has completely drained out, install the engine oil drain bolt assy with a new one. Proper torque for it is shown in the table.

Engine Oil Drain Bolt: 25 N*m (2.5 kgf*m, 18 ft*lb)
NOTE
- If a torque wrench is not available, this item should be serviced by an authorized Kawasaki dealer.
Recommended Engine Oil
Type: API SJ, SL or SM with JASO MA, MA1 or MA2
Viscosity: SAE 5W-50
NOTE
- Do not add any chemical additive to the oil. Oils fulfilling the above requirements are fully formulated and provide adequate lubrication for the engine.
- Install the oil filler cap/dipstick.
- Start the engine.
- Check the oil leakage.
Engine Oil Capacity
1.3 L (1.4 US qt)
Although 5W-50 engine oil is the recommended oil for most conditions, the oil viscosity may need to be changed to accommodate atmospheric conditions in your riding area.
Final Gear Case Oil
WARNING
Motorcycle operation with insufficient, deteriorated, or contaminated oil causes accelerated wear of the final and countershaft gears, and may result in seizure.
Seizure can lock the rear wheel and skid the rear tire, with consequent loss of control. Change the final gear case oil according to the periodic maintenance chart.

NOTE
- Final gear case oil drains easily and picks up any sediment when the oil is warmed up by running the motorcycle.
- Put the motorcycle on its center stand.
- Place an oil pan beneath the gear case.
- Remove the oil filler bolt and oil drain bolt.

WARNING
Oil on tires can make them slippery which can cause an accident and injury. When draining or filling the transmission case, be careful that no oil gets on the tires or rims. Clean off any oil that inadvertently gets on them with soap and water.
- After the oil has completely drained out, install the oil drain bolt and a new gasket.
- Pour the oil into the gear case.
- Install the oil filler bolt.
Tightening Torque
Final Gear Case Oil Drain Bolt: 9.8 N*m (1.0 kgf*m, 87 in*lb)
Oil Filler Bolt: 9.8 N*m (1.0 kgf*m, 87 in*lb)
NOTE
- If a torque wrench is not available, this item should be serviced by an authorized Kawasaki dealer.

Spark Plug Maintenance If the plug is oily or has carbon built up on it, clean it. The plug may also be cleaned using a high flash-point solvent and a non-metal brush (nylon etc.).
