When it comes to maxi-scooters, 2009 was a glass-half-full / glass-half-empty kind of year. After several record-setting years, scooter importers, dealers and consumers took a cautious approach to the market. Considering the economic situation since the second half of 2008, the cautiousness was prudent. For the most part, supply matched demand - and that worked well for all involved.
Only a handful of new maxi-scooter models were brought into the U.S. in 2009. A few years ago, the slowdown in new arrivals would have been reason for alarm. Today, U.S. consumers already can choose from a broad array of Middleweight Maxis and Big Maxis at a wide variety of price points.
Although the motorcycle market continued a downward slide, Big Maxis appear to have held their own in the market. The Middleweight Maxi market and the 150-200cc class continue to expand as consumers seek out highly fuel-efficient around-town transportation. Consumers are looking more at what scooters have to offer for their commuting needs, as well as for recreational purposes. We predicted this trend years ago, and see no evidence of its waning.
This was a good year to reflect on the quality of existing offerings, and the strong commitment to the U.S. market made by several reputable brands. As such, our ScooterMaxi Awards of Distinction for 2009 recognize not only innovation, but stabilization and maturation of the market.
